In his third back-to-basics look at the Bible, popular theology professor and bestselling Catholic author and speaker, John Bergsma, highlights the presence of Jesus in the psalms and helps us understand their meaning in light of the story of salvation.
Bergsma employs the same conversational style and simple illustrations found in Bible Basics for Catholics and New Testament Basics for Catholics to help bridge the gap between the world of contemporary Catholics and the ancient world of the Bible.
In Psalm Basics for Catholics, John Bergsma introduces us to King David, the story of Israel, and the salvation of the Jewish people through the coming of Jesus. For more than two thousand years, Christians have sung, chanted, and prayed the psalms, a practice of worship inherited from our Jewish ancestors in faith. Whether prayed during Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, or in personal reflection, these ancient hymns continue to be a guiding light for Catholics. Yet, rarely do we step back and look at how the psalms fit into the story of salvation revealed in the Bible the way Bergsma does here.
Bergsma also addresses common questions about the psalms, including:
• Do the psalms really predict Jesus?
• What do we make of the so-called curse psalms?
• Why do we pray the psalms in the Liturgy of the Hours?
• How do I read and pray the psalms?
Bergsma's insightful, practical examination of the psalms helps Catholics see how their promise is fulfilled in Christ.

Psalm Basics For Catholics was an amazing intro to the Psalms. Before starting a scripture study on the Psalms, I read one other (recommended) book about the Psalms by a very well known and respected author, but it did little to prepare me for reading the Psalms. I came across Dr. Bergsma's book just in time before my class started. It was incredibly easy reading, and taught me a LOT more than the other book I read. Now after the first of my first of five instructor-led sessions on the Psalms, I can see that Psalm Basics was the perfect preparation to learn in-depth about, and appreciate & pray the Psalms.
Seeing the Psalms organized this way, in the context of salvation history, is very enlightening. Dr. Bergsma's drawings are simple, but brilliant. I love his "Psalms You Must Know" and have taken that to heart. Also he offers several options for systematic reading of the Psalms, which will be very helpful. Psalms Basics is easy to read and understand, and it is a great help in praying the Psalms with the Church.
Excellent resource for those of us who have waited to begin this basic obligation of our Faith! Sorry it has taken me so long but having come to the need to become more familiar, I couldn't ask for a better Introduction!!
I teach 5 grade Religious Ed , I always include stories of King David , and how important Psalms are to our Mass. This book has made my job easier. I found his insights ( Dr Burgsma ) very interesting.
Since our Cantors are called on each weekend to lead us through a psalm at Mass, our Music Minister will be giving them copies of Dr. Bergsma's book and guiding them through it at weekly rehearsal a few pages at a time. The book offers a great perspective on the psalms!
