Have you ever wondered what the first Easter Sunday was like? In this inspiring Bible study, Dr. Brant Pitre takes you on a guided tour of the final chapter of the Gospel of Luke and the famous account of the disciples who met Christ on the Road to Emmaus. Walking verse-by-verse through Luke’s detailed account of Easter Sunday, this talk reveals:
• Why Jesus was raised on a Sunday, the first day of the week
• The crucial significance of the Empty Tomb
• Why the disciples were unable to recognize the Risen Jesus on the road
• How Jesus led the first Bible study after Easter
• How Christ celebrated the first Mass after the Resurrection
• The four key theories of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist held by different denominations
• What Jesus’ Risen Body was really like
These and many other insights will be gained as you follow this inspiring and scholarly interpretation of the climax of the Gospel. If you want to deepen your joy in the Resurrection and your love for the Eucharist, then this talk is for you.
I bought this lesson hoping it will tell me something I have been curious about for a long time, namely, how was it that the two disciples recognized him in "the breaking of the bread". This lesson provided me with the background and insight I needed to finally "get it". Listen to it and you should be able to as well. Just try to remember this, once you have finished the whole thing and thought about all Brent explains. For some reason Brent does not explicitly mention this himself in the lesson. It is simply that it was in "the breaking of the bread", that they recognized him, Jesus, in the Eucharist! Even if you understand this now simply because I have pointed it out to you, if you listen to the lesson you will appreciate its significance much better as well as other curious elements of that story. Such as why it just so happened that it was at that point that he, the human figure of Jesus, decided to make his "farewell" by disappearing from their sight. When He explained his passion and death to them along the way, perhaps, perhaps as a byproduct, He may have also explained to them the Real Presence in the Eucharist, another thing they had not recognized about His identity until later. Great lesson.
Full of fascinating, yes amazing, insights into this famous story. I highly recommend it.
The Road to Emmaus
Dr. Pitre clearly explained the meaning of the text concerning the presence of Christ during and after the journey. I also like the Biblical understanding of who the two people were. One was Cleopas and the other was not necessarily a man. Dr. Pitre explains, it could have been his wife.
What a beautiful reflection of Scripture! This was so powerful I had to purchase for my classmates who will, God willing, be ordained deacons this coming April. Thank you for committing to have reflections like this available to everyone.
