Many Christians have heard of St. John of the Cross’ famous book, The Dark Night of the Soul. But if you’ve ever picked it up and tried to actually read it, you may have found yourself confused. What exactly is the ‘dark night’ of the soul? How do you know if you’re going through the ‘dark night’ or not?
In this exciting Bible study, Dr. Brant Pitre takes St. John of the Cross’ classic spiritual teaching on the dark night of the soul and unlocks its meaning by looking at what St. John himself considered the key to his mystical theology: Sacred Scripture. In this Bible study, you will learn about:
• The Dark Night of the Senses vs. the Dark Night of the Spirit
• What Bible passages were used by St. John to explain the Dark Nights
• Who experiences the Dark Nights and why God allows them
• What to do when experiencing the Dark Nights
• How the Dark Nights are a kind of Purgatory on Earth
If you’ve ever experienced difficulty and dryness in prayer, or if you’ve ever wanted to understand St. John of the Cross’ teaching from a biblical perspective, or if you just want to make progress in prayer and the spiritual life, then this Bible study on the Dark Night of the Soul is for you.
Dr. Pitre is exceptionally gifted in sharing depth of knowledge via clear and inspiring words. I listen to the lectures in my car, digesting the information, holding onto pieces that resonate in my ear, in hope that the Holy Spirit will bring these words back to me for the world as needed. Thankful for my priest that led me to this beautiful gift. Thank you Dr. Pitre, you are a beautiful gift.
I found it very easy and effective
The Dark Night of the Soul
It was so deep and informative.I loved it.
This was a great talk that Dr. Pitre gave. In listening to it, it stirred up memories of another study that I remembered. In doing some digging, I found that a group of us had done the study, Spiritual Theology by Dr. Pitre 10 years ago. I have already approached friends to do the Study of The Dark Night of the Soul as we could do this in one study time. Yet, I feel drawn to redo the Spiritual Theology study again as we have moved deeper into our Catholic Faith. We absolutely love how Dr. Pitre draws us into our Jewish roots. It is hard for me to not be so zealous while in other studies knowing what Dr. Pitre has taught me and continues with his weekly commentary on the Sunday Mass readings. my friends and I give his CD's out as gifts now. I highly recommend all of Dr. Pitre's materials. Hope to be able to hear him in person some day.
