• What is a "Covenant"?
• How many are there and why are they important?
• What do all the Old Test. Covenants point forward to?

  • From biblical scholar John Bergsma -- two-time teacher of the year at the Franciscan University of Steubenville -- comes this fresh, fun, and authentically Catholic introduction to the "big picture" of salvation history.

This overview of the Bible is based on Bergsma's wildly popular introduction to theology course (Old Testament and New Testament) at Franciscan University, where he is a colleague of Scott Hahn. Bergsma combines sound theology, academic expertise, pastoral wisdom, and an endearing playfulness to draw readers into the connection between the great stories of the Bible and salvation in Jesus. Central to the book's themes are Bergsma's signature illustrations of key biblical characters, which are deceptively simple but profound.

Awesome Book!!

This has to be one of my favourite books!! Dr. Bergsma looks at the different covenants in the Old Testament and shows how they are fulfilled by Jesus in the New Testament! What's more, is that it is an easy read - I have given it to my teenagers who have also read, understood and enjoyed the book immensely! It has good humour and illustrative "stick figure" drawings to highlight concepts! I recommend this to all my Catholic friends as I believe it should a MUST for every Catholic!

Every Catholic needs to read this

The Old Testament is LONG and oftentimes difficult for 21st Christians to make sense of. In this book, Bergsma illustrates the overarching themes of the Old Testament and connects them with the New. He isolates the various covenants God made with man and shoes how they point towards Christ and the fulfillment of those covenants. The book tied up my mental “loose ends” and helped me to better understand the Bible as a whole. Although the New Testament is briefly covered in this book, this book should have been titled, “Old Testament Basics.” After finishing this one, you’ll want to get Bergsma’s sequel, “New Testament Basics for Catholics, which entirely addresses the New Testament.

Learning begins with the first page

I've just started reading this book and already have learned a lot. The simple drawings are an incredible plus to understanding the written parts. I'm a senior adult - "cradle Catholic" and surely wish I'd had this book when I was growing up.
