CP 292

• What is a "Psalm" and who wrote them?
• How do the Psalms fit into the story of salvation?
• What prophecies of Jesus do the Psalms contain?

  • In his third back-to-basics look at the Bible, popular theology professor and bestselling Catholic author and speaker, John Bergsma, highlights the presence of Jesus in the psalms and helps us understand their meaning in light of the story of salvation.

Bergsma employs the same conversational style and simple illustrations found in Bible Basics for Catholics and New Testament Basics for Catholics to help bridge the gap between the world of contemporary Catholics and the ancient world of the Bible.

In Psalm Basics for Catholics, John Bergsma introduces us to King David, the story of Israel, and the salvation of the Jewish people through the coming of Jesus. For more than two thousand years, Christians have sung, chanted, and prayed the psalms, a practice of worship inherited from our Jewish ancestors in faith. Whether prayed during Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, or in personal reflection, these ancient hymns continue to be a guiding light for Catholics. Yet, rarely do we step back and look at how the psalms fit into the story of salvation revealed in the Bible the way Bergsma does here.

Bergsma also addresses common questions about the psalms, including:

              • Do the psalms really predict Jesus?
              • What do we make of the so-called curse psalms?
              • Why do we pray the psalms in the Liturgy of the Hours?
              • How do I read and pray the psalms?

Bergsma's insightful, practical examination of the psalms helps Catholics see how their promise is fulfilled in Christ.

Excellent Company / Excellent Service

If you are reading this review, you have already taken an interest in learning more about the Catholic faith. Let me assure you that this is a great place to be. Dr. Bergsma has a gift for teaching. I thought I new the Bible pretty well. I was treated to a series of "ah ha" moments that make me want to re-read all of his books with a highlighter. I have the Basics for Catholics set (Old Testament, New Testament and Psalms) and I am grateful to Dr. Bergsma and the crew at Catholic Productions for their superb customer service. (I'm talking to you Michael! :-))

Gives A Good Understanding On What The Psalms Is About

I liked the Psalms and also always wondered how I can learn more about it. This is a very good and easy to understand book about the Psalms! Highly recommended to those who wants to know more about the Psalms, especially knowing how they are grouped, how the Liturgy of The Hour uses it.

Amazing Intro To The Psalms

Psalm Basics For Catholics was an amazing intro to the Psalms. Before starting a scripture study on the Psalms, I read one other (recommended) book about the Psalms by a very well known and respected author, but it did little to prepare me for reading the Psalms. I came across Dr. Bergsma's book just in time before my class started. It was incredibly easy reading, and taught me a LOT more than the other book I read. Now after the first of my first of five instructor-led sessions on the Psalms, I can see that Psalm Basics was the perfect preparation to learn in-depth about, and appreciate & pray the Psalms.

Psalm Basics book

Seeing the Psalms organized this way, in the context of salvation history, is very enlightening. Dr. Bergsma's drawings are simple, but brilliant. I love his "Psalms You Must Know" and have taken that to heart. Also he offers several options for systematic reading of the Psalms, which will be very helpful. Psalms Basics is easy to read and understand, and it is a great help in praying the Psalms with the Church.

Spiritual class

This is literally Dr. Pitre’s spiritual theology class and is a great way to learn about spiritual theology. I like the fact that you can get to experience a college level class and learning on this subject. I learned much and have grown in my knowledge and insight. Thank you for sharing the knowledge of a college course with us to help us grow in faith and knowledge. Worth the money.

Marriage, the Family, and Spiritual Warfare in Scripture

A true catholic essential in understanding the church.

I just sat through 3-4 hours , slowing down , looping and making 10 pages worth of notes with my transcriber software.
Thank you Catholic Productions and Dr Brad for this mind blowing product. I'm truly blessed to have chosen this as my first purchase.
The recording quality is superb with little distortion even at slower speeds , Dr Brad's passion , diversity of knowledge and ability to bridge the content to subtopics and return seamlessly is unmatched.
Not only is this product great on a theological level but also spiritually nourishing and will make every listener appreciate the eucharist and sacraments more. Nay sayers and skeptics of the crucifix and the real presence of Jesus in the eucharist , apostolic succession will be in for a big surprise.

Jesus and the woman at the well

Dr. Pitre presented a whole new vision of this very important story in John's Gospel.

Cleaning my kitchen . . .

Ever since discovering Dr. Pitre's videos, I've turned off the news on TV, and turn on one of Dr. Pitre's videos while I clean my kitchen. The last time my kitchen received a deep cleaning (today!), I turned on Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Papacy. I've watched/listened to this video many times. My respect for the papacy has grown through Dr. Pitre's lecture. Why have I never heard what he's teaching? I wish I had an answer. Thank you, Dr. Pitre, for teaching us now! And thank you for your excitement. It's contagious.
