Have you ever read something that completely changed the way you see Jesus and the Bible? That's what Pope Francis' document, The Face of Mercy, did for Dr. Pitre. At the very heart of Jesus' mission and message was something we often overlook: the message of mercy. "I desire mercy, not sacrifice," Jesus says (Matt 12:7). But what does this mean?
In this transformative Bible study, Dr. Pitre takes you on a journey into the heart of mercy in Sacred Scripture. In four riveting presentations, you will learn about:
• How the God of the Old Testament is a God of "Mercy"
• How Jesus fulfilled the ancient Jewish feast of the Jubilee Year
• The Deeper meaning of the Blood and Water from the Side of Jesus Crucified
• What Jesus really meant when he said "Be merciful as your Father is merciful" and "Judge not lest you be judged" (Luke 7:36-37)
• The Parables of Mercy: the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin, and the Prodigal Son
• Indulgences and the Jubilee Year of Mercy Explained: understanding the "Holy Doors"
• The location of the Lost Ark and how Mary is the "Mercy Seat" of the New Covenant
Mercy is at the heart of the Gospel any year, but Pope Francis has put it at the very center of the Year of Mercy. Yet many Catholics are not quite sure why Pope Francis called for a "Year of Mercy" or how to obtain the special Jubilee Year of Mercy Indulgence. If you've ever wanted to understand and receive the astounding mercy of God, or if you know a 'prodigal' son or daughter who really needs to hear Jesus' message of mercy, then this Bible study is for you.
A closer look at the biblical texts and sources behind this study, for those who want more detail before purchasing.
Key passages & sources examined: Key passages & sources examined: God revealed as 'merciful and gracious' (Exodus 34:6–7); the Jubilee year (Leviticus 25) and Daniel's seventy weeks (Daniel 9); Jesus' Nazareth sermon (Luke 4) and 'seventy times seven' (Matthew 18:22); 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice' (Matthew 9:13; Hosea 6:6); the parables of Luke 15; and Mary as the new Ark (Luke 1; 2 Maccabees 2). Draws on Pope Francis's The Face of Mercy, St. John Paul II's Dives in Misericordia, St. Faustina's Diary, and the Catechism on indulgences (CCC 1471–1479).
Is this tied only to the 2016 Year of Mercy?
No. Though it was recorded around the Jubilee Year of Mercy, most of the study is on the biblical roots of mercy — the Old Testament, the parables, and the Cross — which apply in any year.
Does it explain indulgences?
Yes. One session lays out what the Church actually teaches about indulgences and the 'temporal punishment' of sin, drawing on the Catechism (CCC 1471–1479), for those who find the topic confusing.
How long is it and what format?
About 3 hours 54 minutes across four presentations, available on CD or MP3.
Who is it for?
Anyone wanting to understand God's mercy more deeply — or hoping to share it with a 'prodigal' son or daughter. A printable outline and audio excerpt are available above.
