Am I Poor in Spirit?

by John Bergsma November 16, 2018 0 Comments

In the beatitudes that Jesus gave in the Sermon on the Mount, he calls us to be "poor in spirit." But, what exactly does that mean? And, what, if anything, does being "poor in spirit" have to do with being poor in temporal, material things?

In this insightful presentation Dr. Bergsma provides not only the meaning of Jesus' words but also the implications it has for us in growing in the spiritual life.

One nugget from this video is Dr. Bergsma's explanation of Jesus' disciples' shock on who could inherit the kingdom of God if it were easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for the rich to inherit the Kingdom.

Perhaps unknown to many and perhaps even the opposite of what many think, in the backdrop to the disciples shock was that the rich and wealthy of Jesus' day were actually those who had the leisure to remain ritually pure and spend time in the temple praying and offering sacrifice. So, if they who kept the laws of Moses arguably better than anyone could not enter the Kingdom of Heaven, what chance does the commoner have who did not have such leisure and money to remain ritually pure and offer sacrifice in the temple according to the Law?

Hopefully, this brief introduction, taken from Dr. Bergsma's series on the Sermon on the Mount, can be a cause for all of us to transparently take inventory of the pursuits of our heart.
