Tenth Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year C

At the town gate of Nain, Jesus meets a funeral procession. What does his response reveal about his power over death?

On the Tenth Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year C, the Gospel recounts the raising of the widow of Nain's son—a miracle found only in Luke. In The Mass Readings Explained, Dr. Brant Pitre walks through this Sunday's readings and shows how Jesus, greater than the prophets, holds power over death itself.

In Luke 7:11–17, moved with pity for a grieving widow, Jesus touches the bier and says, “Young man, I tell you, arise,” and the crowd concludes that a great prophet has arisen. The first reading recalls Elijah raising the son of the widow of Zarephath (1 Kings 17), Psalm 30 gives thanks to God who lifts up from the depths, and in Galatians 1 St. Paul recounts his own calling.
